A BIRDING ADVENTURE FROM CUSCO TO THE AMAZON

Embark on an exhilarating birdwatching journey through Peru’s diverse landscapes. Beginning in Cusco, we venture to Huacarpay wetland and Ampatune Lagoon, where Andean and rainforest avian treasures await. At Kuporo Lodge, strategically located between the Amazon plains and the Andes, we explore a variety of habitats, spotting unique species like Rufous Vented Ground Cuckoo and Torrent Duck. Continuing our ascent to different elevations, we encounter Tufted Tit Tyrant and the iconic Cock Of the Rocks. In the Soqtapata conservation concession, Black Tinamou and dazzling hummingbirds enchant us. Our adventure takes us to Huadyumbre and Sachavacayoc, culminating at Collpa Chuncho with vibrant macaws before exploring Tres Chimbadas lagoon.

Practical Information

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the best time of year to take this birding tour? +

The optimal birding and wildlife season runs from May through November (dry season), which provides the clearest weather, optimal road conditions across the Andes, and peak macaw flocking activity at Collpa Chuncho clay lick. Rainy months (December to April) offer lush vegetation and active breeding calls, though river levels may rise.

How do we handle altitude acclimatization? +

We start in Cusco (3,400 m) with gentle morning wetland birding, then gradually traverse mountain passes before steadily descending into the lush subtropical cloud forests and lowland Amazon (200 m). Our vehicles carry certified medical oxygen, pulse oximeters, and first-aid kits at all times.

What optics and camera equipment should I pack? +

A pair of 8x42 or 10x42 waterproof binoculars is strongly recommended for each traveler. For photographers, a telephoto lens (300mm–600mm) and high-ISO camera body are ideal for canopy birds. Your guide will provide a high-power Swarovski/Vortex spotting scope with digiscoping phone adapters.

Can special diets (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free) be accommodated? +

Yes, absolutely. Our in-house catering (Del Campo) and partner eco-lodges specialize in fresh, locally grown Andean and tropical produce. We easily cater to vegetarian, vegan, celiac/gluten-free, dairy-free, and nut-allergy requirements with advance notice.

What is your booking, deposit, and flexibility policy? +

A 30% deposit secures your dates, lodge reservations, and permits. The remaining balance is due 30 days prior to departure. Date changes are permitted up to 45 days before departure without penalty, subject to lodge availability.
